Tips for Persuasive Speaking

Recognize that the audience is constantly processing what the speaker is saying. Nonverbal reactions are common for an audience listening to a persuasive speech--a furrowed brow, nodding head, or rolling eyes can be signals from audience members that they either like or dislike what the speaker is saying. Acknowledging these nonverbal reactions can help a speaker explain more in detail certain points.

Identify the target audience. In almost any persuasive speaking situation, there will be a subset of the audience that agrees, that disagrees, and that are undecided about the topic. Preaching to the choir--speaking to persuade those that already believe the speaker--might consolidate the audiences' beliefs but has little benefit beyond that. Trying to persuade the segment of the audience that adamantly disagrees with the perspective voiced is generally unlikely (though not unheard of). Therefore, a speaker ought to focus on the part of the audience that is undecided on the issue. Speaking more directly to this group of undecideds allows a speaker to tailor their speech more towards their concerns.

Pre-empt common objections. Many audience members might be skeptical of the viewpoint advanced by a presenter. Consequently, an orator ought to acknowledge and respond to these objections within the speech. This approach might answer some of the questions that audience members might be asking of themselves.

Most persuasive speeches concern questions of fact, value, or policy. Issues of fact are similar to informative speeches in that they review findings. The difference is that persuasive speeches make judgments about which findings are accurate. Issues of value tackle the time-honored questions of what is good, right, or beautiful. Values can be either individually, communally, or nationally held, and are thus contentious and often clashing. Issues of policy concern what actions should be taken to resolve a particular problem. Policy questions posit a problem and a solution.

Articulate the goals of the speech. Does the speaker want the audience to sign a petition, write their legislator, boycott a product, talk to their friends, buy a certain product, or take some other tangible action? Oftentimes, the conclusion enables a speaker to make a call to action that is the culmination of a persuasive speech.

Cognizant that there should be more cooperation between the above mentioned states on the area of information gathering and data exchange.

1. Calls for cooperation with The Russian Federation by exporting Great Petronian advanced technology for information networks and communication before August 31, 2009.

2. Further proclaims that in order to assist the exportation of the advanced technology Great Petronia will develop a program which enables scientists, analysts and engineers to work in the Russian Federation.

3. Approves of a newly established program that will send analysts to the Russian government for the purpose of economic reforms before March 31, 2010.

4. Further requests cooperation on areas of information sharing with Great Petronia after the establishment of the information network technology in August 31, 2009.

5. Encourages the Russian Federation to open up in economical and political spheres gradually with follow-up projects like those proposed by Great Petronia.

6.Declares that if the Russian Federation does not improve their cooperation on the area of information gathering and sharing by August 31, 2010; Great Petronia will no longer provide the Russian Federation with technical equipment and experts.

Recognizing the need to draft and sign a new, better, more effective protocol and international agreement to diminish carbon and other CFCG emissions, and finally

Deploring the posting of child pornography on the Internet, which is an exploitation of children,

Condemning proliferation of slander on the Internet, including, but not limited to deliberate

falsification of information,

1. Strongly urges nations to deem the distribution and creation of child pornography a

crime, if nations have not already done so;

2. Calls upon governments to recognize the disastrous effects of defamation of character

and other slanderous actions, including "falsification of information";

3. Recommends that all interested nations participate in a conference under the auspices

of the CPCJ on establishing ethical standards on proper computer conduct, to be held

before December 31, 2002;

4. Further requests corporations and non-governmental organizations contribute advice to

the conferences established in the aforementioned clause;

5. Encourages follow-up conferences to be held at intervals no longer than two years to

assess technological advancements and recommend revisions to the aforementioned

Preamble

We, as the Progressive Petronians, embrace an agenda that seeks peace, prosperity and security for the blessed nation of The Great Petronia, especially in regards to our relations with the Russian Federation.

Principles

The Progressive Petronian Party was built upon a foundation of democracy, freedom, independence, economic stability, safety and peace, using these ideals to govern our relations with the Russian Federation. To strengthen these relations, we pursue openness, fair governance and multilateral solutions. We also greatly respect the human condition, urging protections for the rights of all people.

Priorities

Political

1. Governance Our Party supports the newly elected Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, and the promotion of the democracy in the country to allow more sustainable governance to flourish. We believe power in the Russian government has become too centralized and overwhelming.
2. Corruption and Transparency Our Party condemns the endemic corruption in the Russian government and supports democratic reforms within it to establish greater transparency, accountability and trust between the officials and the people.
3. Freedom of Speech Our Party pushes for greater protection for all venues of the media so that all outlets are encouraged to speak openly on issues even if they criticize the government and politics.
4. Territorial/Self-Determination Disputes Our Party wishes for Great Petronia to act as a mediator for regional territorial/self-determination disputes (i.e. Russia-Georgia, Russia-Ukraine, Serbia-Kosovo) so that compromise can be reached between conflicting parties of said disputes.
5. Chechnya Our Party supports financial and technical assistance, including sending engineers and developing infrastructure, to Chechnya to rebuild the area. In doing so, we hope to repair Chechnya-Russia relations.
6. International Solutions Our Party insists upon consulting the international community when Great Petronia decides upon any certain action in regards to the Russian Federation, so we can use a multilateral approach instead of a unilateral one.
Economic
Free Trade Our Party supports open, steady and stable trade with the Russian Federation without trade barriers, including tariffs, taxes, etc. We hope to broker a free trade agreement with the Russian Federation to allow for the free flow of trade traffic.
Energy/Oil/Alternative Energy Our Party advocates increasing oil imports from the Russian Federation, while diversifying our oil sources or the nations that we import oil from. We also firmly advocate developing alternative energy resources (i.e. wind, solar, hydro, nuclear, etc.) to diversify our total energy sources.
Business Protection Our Party firmly highlights the need for fair and just treatment of businesses in the Russian Federation so they can operate safely without concern for raids, unnecessary inspections, etc.
Entrance into the World Trade Organization (WTO).Our Party emphasizes the entrance of the Russian Federation into the WTO in hopes of bolstering Petronia-Russia trade relations by paving a foundation of trust, oversight, openness and stability.
Social
Human Rights Our Party backs President Medvedev’s efforts to protect human rights, especially in the cases of prison overcrowding, unfair detention and cruel punishments. Transparency in regards to the Russian Federation’s political agenda and actions is necessary, so that we know what human rights violations and improvements occur within the nation and what we can do to assist.

Military Terrorism

i. Nuclear Facility Security Our Party strongly pushes for greater security at nuclear facilities within the Russian Federation to prevent unauthorized persons (especially terrorists) from stealing nuclear materials from said facilities.
ii. Communication and Information Our Party asserts the need for the Russian Federation to allow for free and open access to information regarding terrorist activities in the nation.
Nuclear Arsenal Reduction Our Party urges the Russian Federation to cooperate with the international community to reduce its nuclear warhead stockpile even further by negotiating and abiding by more international treaties and agreements.
Missile Defense Shield Our Party supports the construction of a missile defense shield in Europe to protect nations, including Great Petronia, from future strikes from hostile nations or terrorists.

Environmental Climate Change

i. Carbon Emissions Our Party supports negotiating with the Russian Federation to further reduce and restrict carbon emissions through international agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol.
ii. Clean Technologies Development Our Party supports clean technologies for coal-burning to reduce the pollution output of the Russian Federation and the Great Petronia.
